Abstract:
This report presents the results of a study about agroforestry systems in the district of Vavatenina in Madagascar. Forming part of the FORECAST research project (Agropolis Foundation), this study aims, firstly, to better understand the structural diversity of local agroforestry systems and their evolution; secondly, to better understand their role in terms of resilience face to economic risk. This work is accomplished through a qualitative approach of agroforestry systems and a quantitative approach of technical and economic performance of cropping systems and farming systems (farm and household). The results of this work reveal that the agro-ecological, economic and social context strongly influence the structure of agroforestry systems and farmers' strategies of use, development and management of cropping and farming systems. The assessment of resilience, analyzed with respect to food security and income stability, shows that agroforestry systems contribute significantly to the overall resilience thanks to their diversified and intensive character.
